Description:

This altarpiece by Francesco Francia, known as the "Boatmen's Altarpiece," depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a high throne, tenderly holding the Christ Child. The throne is flanked by pilasters adorned with putti. Standing below are four saints and a donor figure. On the left are Saint James the Greater, holding a book and staff, and Saint Nicholas, identified by his bishop's mitre and crozier. On the right are Saint Florian, depicted in armor and holding a banner with a red cross, and a male donor figure kneeling in prayer. Another putto is visible at the base of the throne, playing a lute. The setting appears to be within a niche or apse with dark walls and a red and white checkered floor. The figures are rendered with a serene and somewhat idealized quality, typical of Francia's style. The altarpiece likely served as a devotional object for a specific group, possibly boatmen or a confraternity associated with the depicted saints.
