Description:

The painting captures a dramatic and tense biblical scene. On the left, a gaunt, spectral figure of an old man, presumably the shade of Samuel, rises from the earth or emerges from a dimly lit opening. He is partially draped in white cloth and appears disturbed or confrontational, gesturing with his left hand towards the right side of the composition. Kneeling before him is a regal figure, likely King Saul, dressed in rich garments of gold and red, wearing a crown. His expression is one of distress and urgency as he points towards the spectral Samuel, seemingly imploring or questioning him. Behind Saul stands a woman, the Witch of Endor, who appears to have facilitated this invocation. She wears a dark, hooded garment with a blue shawl and holds a wand or stick, her expression a mix of apprehension and focus.
