The image depicts a bouquet of sunflowers in a glass vase against a dark background, with some petals scattered on the surface below. Van Gogh created two series of "Sunflowers" paintings; the first in Paris in 1887, depicting the flowers lying on the ground, and the second in Arles in 1888, showing a bouquet in a vase. The "Sunflowers" series was intended to decorate the room prepared for Paul Gauguin in Van Gogh's studio in Arles. He used shades of yellow and touches of green to represent the sunflowers, aiming to capture their full life cycle, from bloom to wilting.
