Description:

This painting depicts Medea, the infamous sorceress from Greek mythology, in a moment of tragic intensity. Dressed in rich classical garments with a commanding posture, she holds a wand or dagger, alluding to her magical powers or the violence for which she is known. At her feet lie two lifeless children, a reference to the harrowing myth in which she murders her own sons in revenge against her unfaithful husband, Jason. Giaquinto paints Medea with an air of sorrow and defiance, surrounded by symbols of fate and vengeance: a serpent coils ominously nearby, and stormy skies loom overhead, evoking an atmosphere of divine wrath and human tragedy. The drama of the scene is intensified by strong contrasts of light and shadow, and the rich, emotional depth of Rococo sensibilities.
