Description:

The painting depicts a scene of chaos and devastation, illustrating the biblical account of the plague in the Philistine city of Azot (Ashdod). The upper portion of the composition shows divine intervention. Christ, with outstretched arms, sits on clouds surrounded by angels or putti, gesturing downwards towards the suffering below. The Virgin Mary is positioned beside him, also looking down with an expression of sorrow and supplication. Below the divine figures, the earthly realm is filled with scenes of death and despair. Numerous figures are depicted succumbing to the plague. Some lie on the ground, lifeless or writhing in agony.
