Description:

Raphael's "Madonna di Foligno" depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a cloud, holding the Christ Child, surrounded by cherubic angels. Below them, on the earthly plane, are several saints. Saint John the Baptist, identifiable by his camel-hair tunic and staff, looks towards the Virgin and Child. Saint Francis of Assisi kneels in adoration, gesturing towards them. A third figure, believed to be Sigismondo de' Conti, the commissioner of the painting, kneels in prayer. Saint Jerome stands on the right, holding a book and accompanied by a lion. Above, two angels carry a tablet, though the inscription is not fully legible. The painting is divided into a heavenly and an earthly realm, connected by the Virgin and Child. The scene is bathed in a soft, luminous light, characteristic of Raphael's mature style, and conveys a sense of divine grace and serene devotion. A landscape with a possible depiction of a falling meteor or lightning strike is visible in the background, relating to the circumstances of the painting's commission.
