Description:

This 1804 oil on canvas painting by Benjamin West depicts the Roman orator and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero discovering the long-lost tomb of the Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes in Syracuse, Sicily. Cicero, dressed in a white toga with a gold cloak, stands gesturing towards a partially ruined monument featuring a sphere and a cylinder, the mathematical symbols Archimedes requested for his tomb. Several figures accompany Cicero, some appearing to be local Syracusans, showing varying degrees of interest and perhaps skepticism. The tomb is overgrown with vegetation, suggesting its neglect. In the background, a classical cityscape with various buildings and a bridge is visible under a partly cloudy sky, indicative of Syracuse in ancient times. The overall tone of the painting is one of historical discovery and the enduring legacy of intellectual achievement.
