Description:

This complex and allegorical painting by Federico Zuccaro, titled "Calumny," depicts a scene filled with symbolic figures illustrating the destructive power of slander. On the left, King Midas with ass's ears sits enthroned, swayed by the personification of Ignorance and Suspicion who whisper into his ears. Before him, Calumny, depicted as a woman being adorned by Fraud and Deceit, drags an innocent, naked man by the hair. Envy, portrayed as a pale, gaunt figure, leads the way. In the background, Penitence, dressed in black, looks towards Truth, who stands nude and points heavenward, seeking divine witness against the injustice. The elaborate frame is adorned with further allegorical figures and scenes, enhancing the painting's moralizing message against false accusations.
