Description:

The painting portrays a scene likely inspired by the biblical story of Bathsheba at her bath. The central figure is a fair-skinned woman, presumably Bathsheba, seated on a cushioned stool. She is partially draped with a white cloth that covers her lower body. Her gaze is directed slightly upwards and to the right, and she appears to be attending to her hair, with one hand raised towards her head. She is attended by three other women. One woman stands behind her, arranging her hair or possibly adorning her with jewelry from a small box she holds open. This attendant has her arm raised and seems focused on her task. Another woman, standing to the left, is partially draped in a white cloth over a lighter garment and a reddish-brown lower garment. She is turned towards Bathsheba and appears to be carrying a large, dark metal vessel, possibly containing water for the bath. Her expression is one of attentiveness. The third woman stands to the right, partially obscured, and is holding a string of pearls or beads, seemingly ready to adorn Bathsheba. She wears a light-colored top and a darker skirt with an apron.
